TRAFFIC SAFETY - FLYING ICE
MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATOR'S RESPONSIBILITY

(Orillia, ON) - Flying ice from a motor vehicle traveling on the highway is an obvious hazard and a dangerous condition.  Ontario Provincial Police have received many complaints from motorists who have been struck by flying ice from a vehicle traveling in front theirs.   This is a hazard that occurs more frequently than we realize during the winter season.

ALL OPERATORS OF A MOTOR VEHICLE are responsible to ensure the vehicle they are operating is free and clear of ice, snow, and debris, as well as to ensure all loads are secured.

Passenger vehicle operators should ensure the vehicle is free and clear of ice and snow to prevent this type of collision.  Commercial vehicle operators are at a greater onus to ensure the removal of ice and snow from the vehicle.  All drivers should complete this task before staring their journey.

When a vehicle is struck by flying ice, snow or debris, DO NOT PANIC.  Calmly and safely move the vehicle to the shoulder of the roadway where it is safe to do so.

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF ALL DRIVER'S TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THEIR VEHICLE AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS.
